The simple problem with a tablet vs head unit battle is most people just want a head unit installed and not have to worry about custom dashed and or getting things to work with it. Not having a SD slot is not the end of the world, simple usb to SD adapter plugged into the usb port should be fine. Or usb thumb drives are cheap enough now a days you can get one of those. I really do not see how not having a SD slot is the end of the world. |
Nice unit! I would love to see it in action. Talking about Android support, this one right here has android support and looks like this is the competition. I bought this pioneer and love it. but the Alpine screen setup looks a bit more appealing.

Not to mention, If your buddy had a new DJ recording on a cd there is no way you could play it instantly on an i-pad n the dash.
No against i-Pad in dash... But definitely "for" a head unit in dash. |
I never said anything about SD cards. I have a GS2 which I have a 32gb one in and hookup indirectly to my system, but that's about it.
I did, however, mention my usb port. As I said, I a lot of flexibility with it... I can play anything from just about any source at any time. USB Flash (and obviously anything with a USB adapter like an SD) AUX (any phone?) AD2P Bluetooth Pandora/Slacker, etc. (via BT or AUX) iPhone/iPod direct connect (although I loathe APPL) Storage is not the issue, it's the price, that being said... I would only get some sort of Samsung tablet, etc. running ICS at full HD, with usb ports (which I would then have the flexibility I currently have and outlined above). I would NEVER buy Apple as they are closed source (no removable anything, no rooting, etc.) Sure it's more work, but anyone even looking at this forum understands that it's rewarding to work on a project and get it done the way you want it. I am the only one of my friends with an aftermarket stereo period, but that won't stop me. Most listen to ripped CDs at 128kps while I have 200lb subwoofers for my home theater at home. Different strokes indeed. My only point was that for $1,500 you can get a good tablet at $600 and then upgrade again in a few years and for another $600 while still paying $300 for a really nice fiberglass install (if you really didn't want to mess with it yourself). This way you'd have an asset that's mobile and even more flexible (updated Gmaps, wifi) for the same price. Something like this: 370z Cubby Tablet - YouTube And as said, it you wanted it nicer instead of some 3M fake carbon ndoc or w/e, you can take the money saved and do so. Give it 2 years and Scion will have tablet screens that can be detached. |
Is this going to fit I the Z? According to crutchfield it says "Does not fit"....

Crutchfield will not say something fits until the actually have the unit and can study it. Sense the chassis is a standard double din it should fit fine. |
Any update on possible release date? I can't believe how long this is taking...

September
I spoke with Crutchfield yesterday and they said that there is like 25 people on the waiting list and if i want it i must pre-order now to get it in September...
|
From my research this is going to need to be a custom install with a trim kit needing to be made. Unless they come out with a specific kit for the Z.
|
Not to thread jack but I'm hoping this unit has nearly ZERO lag when you navigate through the receiver?
|
Anyone plan on putting this unit in their Z?

I still haven't gotten around to upgrading my HU/stereo (work's been WAY to busy), but I just saw this video - looks like some significant rework will need to be done to get this baby to fit. With that apparent 1" overhang of the screen on the bottom - wouldn't it interfere with the climate controls (I included a pic of a Clarion double-DIN install from Crutchfield for reference)?
|
Anybody install this yet in the Z?

I think the slightly larger screen will be more hassle then its worth. One way or another this unit is going to have additional costs be it custom work or a specialized kit in order to fit the over sized screen.
Overall I feel Alpine is behind the game feature wise. Only now offering built in streaming BT audio. The DVD player still can't play video files, only standard DVD or the old VCD formats. And the navigation works but can be very annoying. |
We intslled 2 in both Silverados... Got lucky and were able to fit it in dash with minor modifications. Nice unit. Definitely notice the big screen versus a 7"

Sorry for the necrobump but has anyone tried this unit in the 370z? Can anyone who has installed this in another car comment on how much bigger than a standard double din it is?
I get the feeling our car isn't high volume enough for the perfect fit system so any attempt at installation is going to require at least some upgrade. I'd like to ascertain exactly how much modification is going to be required. I still haven't seen one in my local audio stores as demo units or anything oterhwise I would have done some comparisons myself. |
