2012 Kenwood HU

In my search for the new features of the 2012 Kenwood Head Units, I came across this google cached thread:

Kenwood 2012 Double Din Nav and Multimedia Head Units - Corvette Forum

Seems to be a pretty nice upgrade, although not available until probably april.

optiontrader 01-02-2012 11:57 PM

Good post! Need to wait until April though. I like the fact the GUI is going to be faster!

NickBaragona 01-03-2012 08:11 AM

Yeah, I'm not so sure I like the hard button keys though. On the 9980, was it possible to change the color of the menu? I'd like to have it match the red interior of my 40th as much as possible, and the 9990HD seems to have blue hard buttons.

I have a meeting with Kenwood at CES, i'll see what else i can find out for you guys.

NickBaragona 01-03-2012 01:32 PM

Thanks, hopefully we get some good information next week.

bigaudiofanat 01-03-2012 03:14 PM

Good deal!!!

 cool man.

Synister 01-10-2012 08:24 PM

Would be good to understand availability/release dates based on this week's CES. Kenwood has released their 2012 product sheets here, as well: Kenwood - CES 2012 Las Vegas

Hi Nick/Everyone,

I was looking for info on the new 9990HD HU for my Z06 (funny I found the link here linking me back to the site I use :) and I saw your questions about the hard buttons and the color. I'm like you, I have a red and black theme going, and like things to match. Here's the info on the current 9980 unit:

Variable Illumination (256 Color Palette): You can adjust the head unit's touchscreen and button illumination from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua Blue, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White, or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select three custom user colors that are adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue values from 0-31 each. In addition, you can download still images for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.

So I'd hope the new unit would be similar.

Some updates around list pricing details and availability for the new Kenwood HU's:

I own a C5 and a 370Z and ran across this post. Double D Mods, Dennis, is a great friend and will do anything or answer any question you might have on many units. I purchased a Pioneer system from him for my Corvette. My Z is also getting the DD install here shortly all bought from him. He is one of the best vendors that I have ever worked with. He would welcome your questions.

Very interested in the 9990HD. Toss up between that and the Eclipse 726e

N0SL3N 01-28-2012 04:53 PM

Can we get a group buy pre-order going from one of the vendors?

Synister 01-28-2012 05:27 PM

Maybe Nazar from Wicked CAS could assist or run a forum special?

I've heard that the DNX 6990's will be available mid-Feb.

Just my .02 I would hold off until it comes out. These last kenwood models were very buggy and slow, the last thing you want is another model like it. However with no hands on time with them I am not sure if this is fact or fiction.

Since Kenwood added 10 to the model number, this should be an update and hopefully, not much risk of added bugs. If the GUI is faster, then that is the one thing that had me avoiding it.

Of course, this will probably be delayed until summer... :p

Yes they were buggy, but they were very reasonable with putting out updates for the 9960 in a timely maner. I love the radio, just wish the processor was faster. If they fix that main issue... I'M SOLD!

Very true. I have a DNX6960 and suffer the random iPod lock/crash issues. Hopefully the update addresses that. If not, I am looking into a Pioneer AVIC-Z130BT or AVIC-Z140BH as a replacement.

Again, I may just replace mine with a Pioneer unit and put my DNX6960 in my girl's Tahoe (if she will allow me to, lol).

I have seen some videos of it in action, looks much smoother than the previous model. That was the major complaint and I would hope they addressed it.

Can you please post the links to such videos for the rest of us lowly people.:tiphat:

This looks just as horrible as all the other Kenwoods. The GUI belongs in 1995. The processor may be faster but saying the touch response will be faster doesn't mean much, considering how terrible and slow the older Kenwoods are. Head units are just so disappointing. This is another marginal upgrade when they should have done a complete redesign. ZOMG wait a minute, you mean this new 2012 Kenwood has TRUE VGA RESOLUTION!?!?!?!? OMG. Wait a second, that means the screen is 640x480 resolution, aka garbage, since my phone screen is 2x smaller with 720p HD resolution. Garbage. Also note that the 9990HD has a "VGA" resolution of 640x480 but the lower-end 6990HD has a "WVGA HD" resolution which is actually a slightly larger 800x480. So what, the highest-end model doesn't even have the highest resolution?

Which is why I am looking into the Pioneer unit(s), that I SHOULD have purchased in the beginning!

This is the first video I found on youtube

THE GUI is not bad, but thank GOD it is faster.

I am not a big pioneer guy, there are some threads on here about people having problems with them almost a year after purchase. Others will argue that they have never had a problem with theirs, me I have had mixed bags.

I am looking to get the APP Radio 2 when it is released. Otherwise I will just stick with my DNX6960 and swap the SWI-JACK for the Metra Axxess.
