Installing in dash screen in cubby hole vs below

It seems most install the in dash screen below the cubby hole. Is there any benefit to this? Seems it would look better above.

It would be a lot more visible to thieves for one. And you would have to do a massive amount of fabrication to put it in the cubby to get it to mount soundly.

I wouldn't recommend it. You'd be spending a lot of effort for something that just screams, "Steal me".

There is not enough depth on the top cubby hole unless it is just a screen only. If not you will need to modify the ac ducts and see if you can get enough space back there.

Well said, i couldnt say it any better than that.

If you put it in the cubby, seems like it would be less visible to me. If you kept the door anyway. I really dislike the whole cubby thing and am trying to figure out how I could get a navi set up in there to make it look less cheap. Once I get my Z that is. One beautiful day.

bigaudiofanat 12-04-2011 12:13 AM

If you search this has been asked before. Simply put there is not enough room to put a unit on top

If you dont have a Z yet and it bothers you that much just get one with the factory nav... no cubby.. completely clean and flush integration.. and zero incentive for thieves to try and steal.

Ya but you better read this carefully before jumping on board about that PITA factory nav.

You could do this.

Tablet Dash

martin82 02-10-2012 01:30 PM

that's nice, I would actually like to keep the lip, and be able to swing up higher when I use it.

This and modifying the AC ducks is not something I would recommend.

Would make a GREAT DIY topic.

vpn2001 02-13-2012 03:35 PM

How do you turn the tablet off or on?

maxtopher 02-14-2012 08:02 AM

There is a App called Power Manager. Basically, it knows when the tablet is receiving power from the charger and automatically turns it on and disables sleep mode. Then when the car is turned off it automatically disables all connections and goes into sleep mode to conserve power.

Gungrave 02-14-2012 09:03 AM

Where do you get the app to show all of the gauges for the car? And does it have to be physically connected to the car in order to receive the info on it while driving?

maxtopher 02-14-2012 11:28 AM

It's called Torque on the App store and it connected through a Bluetooth OBD-II

Scan Tool

You need to remove the two screws holding the OBD port in place under the steering wheel and relocated it off to the side. Otherwise, the adapter will hang down and hit your leg. I guess with all this interest I'll have to do a DIY write up with pics.

cheshirecat 02-14-2012 03:58 PM

Awesome youtube video. Exactly what i want to do with my car, but I need a headunit with bluetooth ad2p so I can stream audio from the tablet. Between that and having to gut the entire Bose system and throw down the cash for speakers, subs, a box, and amps... yeah. It's a small investment.

maxtopher 02-15-2012 11:23 AM

You could use a physical antenna adapter to override the fm input when in use. You would suffer from some quality loss though. Otherwise, the easiest most inexpensive way to do it is to get the adapter and wire harness that allows you to use one xm input for aux. As a bonus it would also let the stock bose deck control an ipod. It would only set you back about 100 bucks.

needaZ 02-21-2012 07:34 PM

I like that a lot. I just can't see dropping 8 gs on a nav system and heated seats. Although, I'll try to find a used z with the touring package if it is a good deal.
