Audio Problem w/ Big System

Help Guys,

I have a Pioneer Avic N2 (Flip out/ In Dash DVD) thats going bad (very important point here, the screen went black, amongst many other issues). I have 2 Alpine Type R 12s, 1 Mono block 600w amp for each sub, and 1 Four Channel Amp for the Type R 6.5s and 6x9s.

This is whats going on. I was cruising into work, I've never had any issues with the stereo except for the Head unit, the stereo was not up that loud at all. My subs cut out, but sound was coming through the speakers. I was like WTF?

I get into work, I checked the fuses in the distrobution blocks, to see no blown fuses. I then checked the subs to make sure I couldnt hear a scratching sound or smelled them for blown voice coils. Nothing.

I then checked all the power/ ground connections going into all of the amps, nothing was loose. I drove into work today, still had no power to the subs, but I did notice that when I turned up the volume, minus the subs, the sound would cut out and make a cracking sound in all but 3 of the 4 speakers, and the volume would cut down to almost a whisper out of the driver's side front 6.5.

What do you guys think? Is it possible the Headunit's RCA connections could go bad? Or the Headunit could be so close to death that its causing this issue? Maybe a loose connection somewhere? I've never had an issue with the system until now, and its been in several years now.

Please guys, give me some insight.
thanks.

I'll be handing out eRep all day.

Hook an I-pod up to each amp input via a mini to rca cable. This will tell you if its the amp or deck.

ewwww. you are the man, thats a very good idea, thank you! I never even thought of this. eRep given!

Have you checked the amps themselves? Sometimes they have a built in fuse usually <20A. Maybe that popped on the subs so the Amps are not supplying power, but the signal is still getting to the subs which is why you still hear music from them?

Man, its weird, I didnt have the system up very loud at all, it just cut out, but I will check the fuses on the amps. If I had to put money on it, I really think the deck just took a sh*t, and I gotta replace it.

Whats even more weird is how I tun up the volume and the highs cut start to cut out, and go to a whisper into only the one driver's side 6.5. Its weird man.

Im sending you eRep as well, thank you!

The volume really doesn't matter when it comes to the power. If there's a short or a spike, it doesn't matter what volume you're at. That's what the fuse is there for.

My guess is your HU did take a dump, and it sent a spike through the system. The amp fuse might have absorbed it, but in the end some still got to the 1 speaker that doesn't work right now...

If your highs are cutting out, where do you have a bypass filter setup at? The HU or the Amp? That will help lead you to where your issue might be...

eastwest2300 11-02-2011 01:07 AM

The bypass filter for the highs is through the Amp, it sucks because the headunit screen is out, so I cant see and or manipulate anything on the deck settings, but what Im going to do is test everything with a multimeter.

It'd be pretty funny for me to pull the deck out, put a new one in, and the problem is resolved that quickly.. If it were that simply, but in all honesty, it could very well be that simple.

As cpt said use a mini jack to rca and run the amp directly off that START at 0 if the volume is up to much you could damage the amp and or speakers.

Make sure the car is on when you test or else the amps will not be on.

Also make sure no sub wires are touching each other even a small piece could be shorting out the amp.

As for the head unit...ya you know my outlook on pioneer east.

Thanks Matt, haha :roflpuke2:, yeah I know how you feel about Pioneer.

Well, my situation got a whole lot worse, now I have no sound from the speakers, just the factory tweeters. (This is a Mitsubishi Eclipse, Not a Z, btw)

So I broke out the multimeter today, this being the 2nd time I had the time to look at my system, I initially checked all the fuses, no blown fuses, I then checked the OHM loads on the subs, they checked out good, I checked the current on all 3 amps, the two batteries and the isolater, and they all where atleast 12.7 volts, I then pulled the deck out, most likely thats headed to the trash, and we'll go from there. I'll keep yall posted.

Thanks for the input guys! You guys RULE & KICK AZZ!

Ok so today, I pulled the Avic-N2 completely out of my car. I should be buying a new headunit either today or tomorrow. I really believe and I'd be shocked if I replace the headunit, and it fixes the problem. I'll keep yall posted.

I bought a new CD player today, it should be here ont the 10th, its the Kenwood KDC-X995..:happydance:

Ohh Matt, I love you, buddy!

I think you answered your own question on... if the headunit blacked out along with the sound cutting I would think it was safe to assume you had a malfunction in the unit.

eastwest2300 11-07-2011 08:17 PM

Yeah but the whole process progressed... from the black screen, to erractic skipping, to the subs going out, then not long after that a couple days I'd guess the sound completely goes out..

I mean the deck was over 6 years old, soo Im just hopeing once I put the new deck in, its a cure all to my problems.

eastwest2300 11-09-2011 03:57 PM

Ok, so I just got done installing the new Kenwood headunit, badass unit by the way, and initially I had the same problem, no sub or speaker output, but the tweeters were working, so I was like WTF, I broke out the multi-meter, and started testing all the connections, everything checked out good.

On the mitsubishi eclipse, under the hood, theres a fuse box where my isolator (which is used to run 2 batteries simultaneously) has a remote lead that has to run to that fuse box, I adjusted the wire, and BAM, I had sub & speaker output, so I believe thats where my problem was.

NickTurnon 11-09-2011 04:35 PM

My Pioneer Nav died on me in my Z. Took out both door speakers with it and completely shorted all audio to the car.

I now have the stock unit and running new kenwood speakers.

I will eventually buy a new unit and use new speakers w/ sub & two amps.

Weird that our units had the same problem. Blacked out, speaker pops and sound goes out

eastwest2300 11-09-2011 06:08 PM

Oh no sh*t, yeah it seems like we had the same issues, luckily I had the Best Buy warranty, I had the deck serviced a good 5 or 6 times, over 4 years. I knew I was gonna have to replace it eventually. What sucks the most is the fact that I really took care of the deck.

It just sucks. Im actually a pretty big Pioneer fan, but I thought maybe it was time to try something else. I do like this new Kenwood unit.
