Playing music from a external hard drive or laptop?

I have not messed with head units or audio systems much so for give me if this is a stupid question. But here in the next few months Im going to be changing the head unit in my Nismo for a HU with a screen that I can use as a GPS and front and rear cameras. But I wanted to check and see if I need to look at any with special features to play music off of a external drive or laptop? I my later get a android table so I can have internet in the car so I may just save all my music to it. Would that take anything special or would it just be an AUX cable? Again sorry for being a newb at audio

Why play off of a lap top or a external hard drive when you can stream music off your phone.
I stream wireless with my Droid x just turn it on and put it where ever you want.

I use one of these. It is tiny. You could do the phone thing too, but I don't have a smartphone so I use the flash drive.

Just buy an ipod to keep in car. The external harddrive is too slow regardless of how nice it is.

I heard all the droid equipment "phones & tablets" only work by plugging the AUX wire into the headphone jack of your device and then to the aux jack to your car. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING WITH APPLE iPhones, the headphone jack does not offer the same quality of music compared to the lower connection of the phone which charges and transfers media files quicker and better quality as well...

The quality is nearly indistinguishable if you're not an audiophile. Especially in a car where you have road and engine noise, you would notice no difference using the headphone output.
