I do have an aftermarket HU. just curious if anyone has modified the door to fit 6x9's on a base Z.

Not really any modification needed just need the correct spacer and the right bolt paters however I would go 6.5 components instead.

Its no myth, a 6x9 is almost the same volume displacement of a 8" sub. It will have more bass, even off deck power due to its effishance. It won't sound as good as a 6.5 set, but it doesn't sound that that is a concern. And yes as big said even a small amp would help.

True however speakers are not subs and 6x9's can not go as low as a subwoofer so I would still recommend doing a sub if bass is what your after instead of distorting speakers trying to cover the freq range that is made for a sub.

do you happen to know what the stock size speakers are???

Im thinking of just doing the 6.5 to make it easier, any recommended speakers?

No they are not, but the OP wanted, "Just get a nice HU, and some nice 6X9's and call it a day. No fancy HU/DVD screens, amps and sub enclosures... This is not a pimped out sedan sittin on 20's. It's a street/weekend track car"

So for that, 6x9's in the doors would be fine, add an amp and it would be better.

I was not saying install a ton of stuff I was simply saying that a SIMPLE polk db 6.5 inch component set would be better for sound and clarity than some 6 x 9 coaxial in the door.

I had a professional 'ear' or should I said old school 'era' audiophile sit and listen to my car for about 30 minutes the other day. He suggested I install 2x 6.5" speakers and a single tweeter into each door, then a second pair of tweeters installed in stock 'base' dashboard location with reduce volume for fill-in. It wold probably involve some custom door panels but he said that would work the best for these cars.

just worried about cutting into the doory to mount 6x9's

guess 6.5 would be better and easier

KusoSama 06-08-2011 03:39 PM

I'd worry about cutting into the door panel also considering how good humans are at "eyeballing" placement... I remember the first and last time I allowed that to happen.

If the doors can handle a 6x9 in the door, I bet you could get a custom fab'd mount kit to install the 6.5" and tweeter next to each other.

I THINK another thing to keep in mind is the grill on the door panel is only about the size of a 6.5 Someone correct me if I am wrong.

you dont have to cut anything, just go to nissan order the plastic holder for the factory 6x9 from a touring pkg car. it goes right in take about 20min start to finish per side...done

You can make templates out of MDF to fit 6x9 or 6.5" or 7" speakers in there. Generaly 6X9 will give you more out put but not necessarily a cleaner output. A good pair of 6.5" components like HERTZ HSK165XL will outperform a 6X9 any day... It does help to have an amplifier.

If you are not using an amp, the choice is yours... You can always install the 6x9 and if you don't like it go with 6.5" components.

Just because we tell you something it does not always hold true for your liking.

I like red, you like blue...
