Factory Nav Ipod Problem

I have a new 2011 with factory Nav.

I have my ipod hooked up through the usb plug in the center console.

About 50% of the time when I start the car, I get a message which says "check usb or ipod." then i have to unplug and replug the ipod to get it to recognize.

Anyone have this problem and know a solution?

BTW I have restored the ipod and this has not helped.

Thanks

What kind of iPod is it? There are many many models, will help narrow down the startup issue.

I had problems with popping and crackling sounds when I played my ipod (2010Z with nav). It turned out that my ipod cable was not an apple original but a cheap non-apple replacement (I bought the ipod used on ebay and that is the cable that came with it). Once I got a good quality cable the playback was perfect. Perhaps you are having the same type issue causing the head unit to have problems connecting to the ipod. If you aren't sure about your cable try a friends cable or something.

I have the same issue with mine. I have also noticed if I change artist through the menu controls, I can't change again unless I unplug. It doesn't bother me that much but I would love to know if anyone found a fix.

Have you switched the dock cable?

I want to say the iPod isn't booting up fast enough. When the NAV finally initializes the iPod is still in a power cycle. Do you have any other apple products you can swap to verify that it is not the USB interface on the nav?

I suspect that you may be right. Wonder if I upgrade to a 7th generation ipod classic, it will resolve the issue. Dont want an ipod touch because I need around 100gb for all my music.

Do you have navi in your car? What ipod are you using?

Wrenise 03-24-2011 06:30 AM

I got the NAV, but I dont have the car yet, but I interface my iPod with the BMW and AUDI with no issues. Its not hard of an interface.

I did have another thought, how is the battery on the iPod? Does it hold a charge while the car is off? Started thinking that if the iPod is dead it needs that small amount of time to charge before starting the boot up cycle.

No the charge is fine.

Let me know how your interface is when you get your Z. When is it coming in?

Looks like we have about the same model, mine is gun metal, touring, sport, with grey interior. I have an automatic though. I need to post a some photos here.

Still havent opened it up with the 1000 break in, I am only at 200 miles. Slick ride though

I have this issue, however at first, the first month or so, I used to get that message alllll the time like you're getting, but it has become much more infrequent with time. I still get the message, but it's very rare. I have a 2010 with nav and use an iPhone 3g which I retired as a phone and now use it as an iPod with its original USB cable.

Zombie thread --

I have this problem intermittently as well (2011, sport touring 7AT), even after swapping out multiple genuine apple and theoretically higher end USB connectors.

I've even had the NAV display/touch screen interface mysteriously go out entirely (though otherwise still play music without interruption!) once or twice (it comes back to life after shutting down and restarting car) -- anyone know what is the fix for this?

Worth nagging the dealership this month? Still under warranty until 2014...

Let me know what happens if you take yours in. I have the same USB connection problem as you. Also had the NAV display go black once or twice also.

I took mine in two years ago regarding the ipod connection. The told me nothing was wrong with it and sent me on my way. Wonder if they have since figured this out.

Hmm.

Will do.

I suspect the USB port is just crap. It's almost definitely related to a persistently loose/poor connection, because switching to a really snug fitting connector has minimized the problem, but a light bump on the connector, and the Nav interface will be affected, at least with a momentary loss of sound.

My guess is the only "fix" is to replace the whole unit and a true fix would require a different port module that isn't such a piece of crap or that takes a different kind of connector entirely.

Will the ipod interface work through the three aux jack ports? If so, I may just switch to that rather than try and have them tear my whole console apart...

I had this problem and replacing the USB port solved it :woot:

I had the same problem until I changed to an iPod with a solid state drive, I'm using the 1st Gen iPod Touch, it works great. I had a 5th Gen Video iPod with 40 Gig mechanical drive and it had the same issues on start up. Someone mentioned the boot up time of the Mechanical HDD devices was too slow, this seems to be the proven case with my 2009.

Forgive me -- I'm not clear on what you mean? I have a gen 5 nano; what do I need to know to include/swap to one with a solid state drive?

Only the classic has a hard drive, rest has no moving parts and is faster. I had the same problem as the op once in a a while, changed my USB plug with a Griffen I had lying around and works perfectly. But 160gb is a pain to search through. Been using bluetooth audio instead. Google Music let's u upload 20k songs for free! Helps to have unlimited data though.

FPenvy 02-04-2014 09:06 AM

if it helps anyone whenever i used a older iphone (3GS) it would pretty much only work when in airplane mode. whenever i bought my 4S when it released i never had 1 problem so far and its been idk like 2 years? now since i got that one.
