Stealth Bazooka install plus powdercoated rear brace bar

Finished up redoing my stereo system. I always loved my old Avic Z3, so I found one on ebay to replace the non user friendly F900BT I had. Also upgraded the door speakers from Infinity to Boston Acoustics and added a Bazooka BTA6250 6.5" 250W bass tube.

While I was at it, I also powdercoated the rear strut brace magnetic black.

The bazooka came out nice and stealthy.
I mounted it with the mounting bases that came with it, but instead of the cloth straps they provided, I used hose clamps, and then cut the styrofoam to fill the sides.

Strut brace:

Sub installed, and one side of the foam fitted. Note the cavity in front of the speaker grill. Bazooka says to leave 2-4" of free space

Foam fillers fully installed:

and all buttoned up!

If you took the foam and spare tire out of the hatch you could keep two adult bodies back there.

take it off the car! Its a lot of work to get it out though.

daisuke149 11-26-2010 11:00 PM

nice mike!

i had thought about that brace bar for a bit but figured it would be a PITA to get out.

I think the brace comes out pretty easily. You just need to remove some of the interior panels to access the bolts.

antennahead 11-27-2010 12:02 AM

Looks great, also doesn't stick up at all. I read where you thought it would be about a 1/2 inch high, but it looks flush

How does it sound? Do they get decent bottom out of a 6"? I realize this isn't "rap" territory, but for rock, blues, and jazz, decent bottom?

Mike 11-27-2010 08:18 AM

it sounds great, much more presence to the music. I thought it was going to stick up, but once I took everything apart, I found there was one M6 sized bolt sticking up about an inch from underneath the car, into that cavity, and I cut it off flush, so the thing fits perfectly now.

You need to remove pretty much all of the interior panels except the quarter panel trim to get it out, then its just a matter of unbolting it.

If I had to do it again, I would move the 'Z' logo up a little. I centered it vertically between the two flat ribbed sides of the bar, but didn't realize the bar was actually slanted a little when installed, so its a little low, but still ok.

daisuke149 11-27-2010 08:26 PM

hey mike, quick question..

in my car.. the flat side with the ridges is ont he sides and the smooth is top and bottom.. in your pictures it looks the opposite? did you turn it?

Mike 11-28-2010 09:45 AM

I don't think so, but I may have. If you look in the upper left corner of the 3rd picture, you can see the brace it goes under, and the flat part is under the flat part of the brace. I don't even know if it would be possible to turn it sideways the way its mounted, but maybe.

daisuke149 11-28-2010 10:16 AM

Hrmm. Maybe tourings are different. Unless u have touring also. Hrmm.

kenchan 12-01-2010 04:42 PM

wow, that's a clever install. nice job!

Mike 12-01-2010 07:59 PM

thanks. I really wanted a sub, but can't afford to lose the space. In my 350z, I put an infinity basslink in the cavity the bose sub went in, but was torn on this one. Initially, it was going to go on the shelf behind the drivers seat, but once I started playing with it after removing the interior, it was an obvious choice.

Jamaica 12-01-2010 09:08 PM

damn thats a near perfect fit.

Mike 12-01-2010 09:44 PM

thanks! not near perfect, but perfect! it is totally flat with the carpet installed.

Jamaica 12-01-2010 09:47 PM

I think you will have it tomorrow. Its a very light gold pearl, you might only be able to see it in sunlight or with a flashlight, but it can be adjusted up or down to taste.

Ty Weezy 12-03-2010 10:00 AM

Mike how do you like the sound of the bazooka? I really want to do a custom box in the spare tire but not sure if I wana drop the cash to make it happen. Im not looking for crazy loud bass just need something more than factory and the bazooka seems like a cheap easy option. Any rattle or compliants about your setup?

HKYStormFront 12-03-2010 10:03 AM

nice mike! can't wait to hear the new setup next weekend!

It sounds great. more bass than I need actually, I have my headunit on the lowest output setting.

N8GTOL 12-03-2010 10:41 PM

Well done! Very clean.

TypeOne 12-05-2010 05:00 PM

Mike that is killer man... I've been so discouraged with my plan of upgrading my audio because of the limited space and I really didn't want to just put a box in the back, or take my spare out.

This is a perfect solution and it's the exact same tube I was looking at!!

Mike 12-05-2010 06:06 PM

go for it!

the only modifications necessary are cutting off the one M6 bolt that protrudes from the underside and cutting up the foam filler piece.

happytheman 07-03-2011 10:59 AM

Will this stealth setup work with Touring/Bose stereo? Love the stealth setup!

roplusbee 07-03-2011 11:50 AM

That is good stuff Mike. I cut up my foam piece also, but I am mounting my amp in the location that you placed the sub. Wicked C.A.S. is going to send me a NISMO stealth box, so no more rattle for me............woohoo.

If I wasn't swapping out the box, I would be interested in your setup. Heck, I need to come see you anyway about some powdercoating. Maybe when I get back to the States.

Waffles 07-03-2011 12:06 PM

That looks amazing.

I might go this route instead of an external enclosure to keep my trunk cover...

Still enjoying the install?

I was until I sold it a few days ago. Car is track only now, so no need for it anymore.

roplusbee 07-03-2011 10:37 PM

Mike:

My car is going to Zerolift for some TT installation, but once I get back I am trying to get some items powder coated. I will PM you the stuff that I am trying to get done. I will get some pix up once I get everything installed.
