Sub and Amp setup for $500, suggestions?

Hi guys,

So I've already decided my headunit and front speaker setup, and now I'm thinking about subwoofer setup.

I'm going with the ZEnclosures box, and I obviously need power cables, so ignore all that from the budget.
This is just for the Amp and Sub/Subs....

Now I say "Sub/Subs" as I am really thinking about 2 x 10" subs.

So before you flame me LOL, it's all about personal choice, and I like the cosmetic look of 2 x 10" :p

I mainly listen to rock music, so no crazy hip-hop/rap crap LOL :stirthepot:

I heard a couple of good things about Alpine Type-R 12" subs, and also the Rockford Punch 3 12" subs.... Are the 10" versions just as good?

Open to suggestions, remember we are working with a total of $500 for the "mono" amp, and 2 x 10" subs only.

Just so you know as someone's bound to ask, the headunit is an Alpine CDA-105

Also if the sub actually looked cool would be a bonus. I have a Black Nismo, with the black/red cloth Nismo interior.

Thanks Guys

Pretty much they are just as good. You are going to need a bit more money like 650 for everything and a good amp to run 2 subs.

The polk mm series subs are nice as well.

I love the Fosgate 10' P3' had 1 in my G35 then 2 in my FX35, sound great, they make a nice grill for them too!

JL Sub + Phoenix Gold Xenon = Win

What did you have in mind for an amp then?

I'm thinking the subs can be found for around $125 each ($250 total),
leaving around $250 for an amp.

These subs are between 300-600w RMS, so pushing 300-400w into each sub would be enough for a smal car right?

So I thought an amp between 600-800w RMS would be enough to drive both subs.

The Phoenix Gold RSd 1200.1 is pushing 1200W x 1 chan. @ 2 Ohms, for $260

Seriously - looks aside - it will be hard to beat one single really good quality sub + amp... If you have your mind made up on the 2 10s then I would think to get the same sound / quality of a single sub /amp setup that should cost about 500 would end up being a couple hundred more. Matt (BigA) should be the best person to point you in the right direction.

Well all suggestions welcome, and a single 12" is always an option.
And I'm sure this is the most cost effective at the end of the day as well.

So just throw out your ideas :)

I could easily be talked into a single 12" LOL ;)

Any advantages with dual voice coild over a single voice coil,
other than it give you different wiring options, and ability to get a different impedance??

TROOPER,

I installed 2 - 10 type R's (whatever this years models are... I think they're 1024 DVC's) and I am driving them with the new Clarion mono amp (800 wt rms stable @ 2 ohms). I picked these subs specifically because they match the Zennclosure internal volumes perfectly for their dual 10's back firing box.

However, I ditched getting the Zen and had a buddy custom build me a box to the same internal specs but placed it where my spare tire had been. That amp will never blow these speakers and It hits crazy hard. I mostly listen to heavy metal and rock and let me tell you, I feel every single bass drum kick and it rattles my teeth.

I bought the speakers and amp on amazon for less than $400, but I was patient and bought everything over several months time.

If you're patient you can get some really great deals. PM me if you want tech. specifics...

Thats the advantages.

Amps can be cheap but if you go to cheap you can end up having a low end amp, sending a distorted signal to your good subs. You need a good strong amp that will push the subs without struggling.

TXA-1000D - Cadence Class D Mono Power 1000 Watt Amplifier

LRX 1.400 - Audison 1 Ch 900 Watt Amplifier

P700-1bd - Rockford Fosgate 700 Watt Class-bd Monoblock Puch Series Amplifier

PDX-1.1000 - Alpine 1 Ch 1000 Watt Digital Power Amplifier

Would be the subs you want to look at. You want a amp that has some leg room and not something that is struggling pushing out power.

A single 12 is another option that you might be happy with. 2 10'2 is going to have more cone area than one 12 and will produce more bass. Only a 12 can go lower but is sometimes not a big deal to people. Also with a single 12 you could go with a lower power amp because you are only running one.

Here are the wiring diagrams for wiring subs.

Thanks to both of you, some good suggestions there again.

I'll stick with the Zenclosures box, as I don't plan on losing my spare wheel.

Going the 12" route could be the best option, like I said the choice of 10's was mainly cosmetic.

And I've been scoping out the Rockford Fosgate Punch series amps and subs.

bigaudiofanat 07-15-2010 07:46 PM

Ya they are both nice, if you have any questions please ask. I use to have a RF punch stage 2 in my hatchback.

How's this......
P700-1BD - Rockford Fosgate 700 Watt Punch Series Amplifier
225W x 1 @ 4-Ohms RMS
450W x 1 @ 2-Ohms RMS
700W x 1 @ 1-Ohm RMS
~$360

P3D212 - Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 3 12" Dual 2-Ohm Subwoofer
Power range: 100-500 watts RMS (250 watts per voice coil)
Peak power handling: 1,000 watts
~$140

So with this dual coil sub wired at 1 ohm, the 700w amp would be more than enough for it, and no risk of damage either, as the sub peak is 1000w.

And the total comes out to pretty much $500 depending where I buy from :)

bigaudiofanat 07-16-2010 12:21 AM

Never look at the peek of what a speaker or sub can do. The real numbers you want to look at are the RMS. Also no matter the amp you never want the gain at full tilt. So you will have to tune it so there will be no distortion.

sound quality > power. especially in a small cabin car like ours
