Factory NAV/Video override, unlock those locked functions while driving
 

As all of you with the factory Navigation system know, a lot of the functions of the system are locked out while driving. Looking for a way around this I read about tips and tricks of what wires to cut and what switches to install. Not wanting to go this route of cutting into my expensive system, I kept on looking for less destructive and more plug and play option.

Last year I found a company, Prestigious Society, that offered just that, a "Navigation and video enhancement module". At that time the module was only available for Lexus and Toyota cars but they were working on one for Nissan and Infiniti cars as well. I stayed in touch with them and when they released their module for the 370Z a few weeks ago, I was their first customer. As such I was their "Beta" tester for the 370Z module and I helped them out by giving feedback and taking pictures during the install, which they will use in their product manual.

I installed the module this weekend and it was as they said, plug and play. It basically is a little box with wiring harness that plugs in between the back of the Nav system and the existing wiring harness. So you will need to take the NAV system out in order to install the module, however, there is no cutting involved. From the module you run a wire with switch that you can place anywhere on the dash. I placed the switch on the right hand side of the stereo/AC control panel, between the Volume and Fan Speed control knobs. You push the switch to get access to the locked out functions while driving.

The lock out deactivation remains active for 5 minutes, after that it switches back automatically. Or you can choose to switch it on and of yourself.

The product itself looks like a quality piece to me and during my first few test drives it functions flawlessly. So I can recommend it to anyone that wants to access those locked functions while driving, but who does not want to cut into their factory system.

And in case somebody is wondering, I am in no way affiliated to the company, I just think they offer a product that is interesting for my fellow 370Z with Nav owners.

I did however advice the company to become a forum sponsor and they intend to do so once their module for the 2010 370's is done (will be done in the next few weeks)

And a final note, unfortunately I will not be able to post pictures of the install and write a detailed DIY, as I had to hand over the pics to the supplier. (as part of the Beta tester deal). But there already are other DIY's describing how to disassemble the dash and take out the stereo, so that should give you guys an idea of the work involved. It took me about 1.5 hours, including taking pictures.

Awesome, I'm going to be getting a Z soon and I want to know if they are intending on making something that will also allow for a back-up camera. I believe there is an option in the diagnostic mode that has a setting for back-up camera.

I have no idea if this module will interface with a back-up camera. All I know is that you have to push the button of the module to release the video lock out. Normally video viewing is only possible when the e-brake is engaged.

so, i'm assuming they don't want you to give out the price yet? But can you select from one of the following to give us an idea:

A. $1-$50
B. $51-$100
C. $101-$150
D. $151-$200
E. None of the above, deposit first born.

I installed this product today. It was a straightforward installation, but a little scary for someone like me who doesn't do this sort of thing very often. But if you are careful and have the right tools, it's actually very easy.

The product works great and it's a very clean installation for those who don't want to cut wires.

I like the (mostly) plug and play, but I think they missed on design compared to the other kit that uses the existing Enter button to switch modes.

Also think both are very expensive for what they do.

The connectors are probably a bitch to put together, it's not like they are producing millions of these by machine. Probably hand made and labor intensive.

I agree it's expensive but having held the part I can see why it would cost a fair amount to make.

I liked the stand alone switch but to each his own.

They used to have a 20% discount code of 370Z, don't know if it still works but it isn't too expensive after all, but I believe you have to splice wires.

Wish there was easier access to the back of these things (like, pull out glove box, unplug Nav harness :) )

Well the whole point of the product is to avoid cutting and splicing. If you are going to cut, you can go to radio shack and get it done.

This install is alot scarier to think about doing, than actually doing it. If you have a trim panel tool, a screwdriver, a socket wrench (for the negative battery terminal) and soft towels you can do the installation. But yes it is scary when you've never done it before. I was very nervous that I was going to damage something, but I really don't have anyone else I would trust with it in my area outside of the dealer (I am fortunate to have a dealership with a top notch service dept). And they are NOT going to install this device for you lol.

Well the nav/bose in my 09 370z has a composite video input. So with this device installed, you could buy a cheap 12v color security camera ($50-$150) and run a line to that input. (and 12v power is right there at the license plate). Mount the camera in the rear of the car and then when you want a rear view, you simply engage the "navi" switch of the device and switch the nav/bose to aux video in and you have the rear view on the monitor regardless of whether or not you are moving. Not super elegant but pretty easy to do. Maybe you could come up with a way to automatically switch the nav/bose to the proper mode when you go into reverse? Don't know.
