BACK-UP camera, for 370Z Touring with OEM radio, DVD, +9G HD, NAV., Bose...

I want a working BACK-UP camera, for my 370Z Touring with OEM radio, DVD, +9G HD, NAV., Bose, bluetooth, video and audio + USB-connections, ... .
Driving my new Z for nearly a month now. Searching the net and car-shops for a (working) reverse-camera.
Seems the answer is not yet given here, though it came up a year ago, or so.
Or was it already answered? I don't plan on getting rid of the original sound-and-nav-system. Not planning on installing Kenwood (or other) brand of systems to replace mine.
And I want a better answer than what I got from the Nissan factory: "No! You bettah no do no work on car-electronics, after buying it, please! Thank you, bye bye."
Thanks in advance, reader. To let me know, what is needed to get the screen to swith to 'rear-view' when in reverse. Nothing more. But nothing less, too.
Much appreciated.
Yours,
JK (Belgium) [that's with a rear-foglight] :tiphat:

hi virgin-kun.

LOL get in line....

Jeffblue 05-26-2010 03:11 PM

This will work. However, on the 2010 model, it is NOT , i repeat NOT plug and play, but it will work, according to the company, which i called. It will not be plug and play for possibly a year. But you can hardwire it into your system.

NISSAN 370Z 2009-2010 NAVIGATION VIDEO INTERFACE

so you'd need the navtool and a backup camera.

Shootpetoet 05-26-2010 03:45 PM

reverse-cam VAV-tool.

That's like in only HALF an HOUR!!
That I get a 'to the point' answer.
Everybody, thanks a lot, for the follow-up and reply's.
I read most of the info on that Nav-tool page, and it seems that the harness makes it 'plug-and-play' for the 2009 AND 2010.
If not, it may indeed not be so much of a problem (to me) to wire it up, into my car.
I'll keep you informed.
Is there, maybe, more info on why the harness would NOT be PnP?
Thanks again.
And RESPECT for such fastworking and SYMPA- forum on this great car of ours.

Dang Jeff, beat me to it!

Jeffblue 05-26-2010 04:09 PM

well apparently the site does say it works for 09 and 10, however, i had heard a forum member mention that it does not work at all with the 2010 nav. Upon calling the company in january, they said that it did indeed NOT work with the 2010 nav yet, but to call back in march/april. i called back once i recieved my car and he said that at that point the interface DOES work with the 2010, but isn't plug and play like it would be in the 09.

So it would appear that their site is not entirely accurate, but i called their tech support, and the above information is what i was told. Since they are located near me i might have them do the install for me. I recommend calling them if you have any other specific questions or require installation instructions.

BTW i have a US Domestic model car. So our nav MAY be different than yours, so this might not work, similar to how the JDM spec camera doesn't necessarily work with US spec cars.

Glad i could help. Let me know what you go with.

Jeffblue thanks for the info looking into it now.

Juruki 05-26-2010 07:19 PM

My answer

Step 1 get rid of stock head unit
Step 2 install aftermarket on keeping or getting rid of stock amps and speakers
Step 3 add whatever you want.

Shootpetoet 05-27-2010 03:09 AM

Thanks,
This is what I asked Navtech:
"Dear sir(s),
On your webpage about this NAV-tool, it says that the item and harness is Plug'N'Play. NISSAN 370Z 2009-2010 NAVIGATION VIDEO INTERFACE
There seems to be some doubt on that 'PnP', so I read on a Z-forum.
My new 370Z came (this month) with the OEM radio, DVD, Nav., Bose, audio/video and USB connections, and the +9G HD, bluetooth, ...
Could you tell me, please, if the parts are indeed PnP, or which kind of (extra) installation effort is to be made, or what is different here, from the PnP-harness.
Thank you very much in advance, for your time and reply.
(I'm planning on installing a back-up -reverse- camera)
Yours,"
...
And this was the reply they sent:
"HI THIS PIECES IS CURRENTLY NOT PLUG AND PLAY WIRES HAVE TO BE CUT
Thank You

...
... An answer that could have come from a Japanes guy that works there.
Does one?

Anyway. Answers like that, make it that after 2 model-years, you still don't find info on the (successfull) installation of a reverse-cam, with use of the Nav-tool -or anything else- on our Z's that come full-option with (best) OEM-systems.
Suppose I don't get my money back after importing this interface-item at +350$ and extra transport, import and taxes, then cut-up the wiring, just to see it won't work.
Previous answers don't give me much hope.

Not sure what wires they mean, but here are 2 installed on 09s
http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...amera-dvd.html

Shootpetoet 05-27-2010 07:53 AM

Nav-thing

The more I want the item, to have a reverse-cam work, the more I find forumitems saying it is PlugnPlay, or that is is NOT and that wires should be cut, or (in october 2009) that the part don't work AT ALL on a 2010 Z.
The pics taken while installing the Navtechthing in a 2009Z, is something else too, then what I have in mind when it says "PnP"!
It ends for me, when the "factory" sells the item at different prices on his own site, or on eBay. And NOT telling me this, when I ask for more information. From -200 to +350$.
I'll tell you what I wanted to hear from the FACTORY, on my question:
"The connections fit (or not) and should be (all or partly) cut-off. Or certain wires need to be connected to this or that color in your car. A very clear and readable booklet comes (or not) with the item, to make installation simple on your car. And YES, it can be (easily) connected to a European Full-option 2010-Z."
Lessons learned from importing sh**..(uh).. stuff from eBay (Hongkong) on electronics that don't work.
I could wait for someone else to be the first to have it installed SUCCESSFULLY in his 2010- Z OEM-stereo-Nav-bluetooth-+9G.HD-etc...
Or I must feel some (sudden) 'trust' with a firm that sells the item at a good price, and which is not to disapear in thin air, when it comes to garanties on stuff that doesn't work. (Like most eBay-sellers tend to do).
So. There still seem to be different answers on the Navtech-thing working or not, with my car.
Let me know, if anyone knows for sure. Please.
And no more: "Get rid of all your expensive optional stereostuff, and buy new radio and navigationstuff"-sh*t please.
'Couse that 's not helping any of us.
:iagree:
Thanks again.

I am thinking of having it installed sometime this summer by the actual manufacturer, since they are within 20 miles of where i live. So that should establish the precedent. They wont install the camera though. He said he'd charge me 100 dollars for installation

and yes, installing an aftermarket headunit is an option, but that decision was made when we got the car, and we chose not to go aftermarket. so whats done is done. we could also sell our cars, and buy a car that has a factory backup camera, but that's not a viable option either.

LOL great post. I am a little tired of those kinds of responses too.

Shootpetoet 05-27-2010 11:29 AM

Thanks Jeffblue.
I take it, you own a 2010Z with OEM-radiostuff and +9G HD?
And that you keep the world (me, at least :-)) informed on installation and working (or not working)?
There's thumbs-up for you, here in Belgium.
Price seems not bad for the job. Cam-install can't be to difficult too.
Goodluck.

I've been looking into this for my 2010 as well (as well as some other options that haven't panned out). I sent a couple of emails to the Navtool company and they sent me this response:

"Hi we don’t have anything on our website, we have adjusted our range rover interface to work with Nissan but you need to cut wires there is no plug and play version available yet"

They then sent me the installation manual so I could look over it. I can't really figure out what I am supposed to do to hook the unit up so I'm afraid to buy it. I looks like you need to cut the three RGB wires that run between the screen and the AV unit and splice the Navtool in and then tap 2 other wires but I'm just not sure.

Here's the instructions.

didymus 05-28-2010 06:04 PM

What's wrong with cutting wires? You can always splice em back..

axeman71 05-28-2010 08:38 PM

I am willing to cut the wires if I know for sure what needs to be done. I have put aftermarket units in other cars so I have a general idea of what's going on. From the instructions I am just unsure what all needs to be done and I am hesitant to spend the money on the unit and have it not work.

Shootpetoet 06-04-2010 03:51 AM

solved...

I 'm not gonna cut the wires. Not unless a working device to use the onboard screen is fabricated.
So, here's the alternative:
Install the camera. And "watch your back", in your mirror.
CCD-color-camera WITH LCD-mirror/screen at only 300$ or so. 120$ cam only.
achteruitrijsystemen: spiegel met ingebouwd LCD en achteruitrijcamera, LN-600MV, LN600MV
Easy to remove the mirror later, when an interface for orig. screen comes available.
Not?
:iagree:

I went to get the camera. 'Jof' is an hour drive from here.
I 'll install the cam and wire it to the center console (first). I then use the AUX-video connection. While handbrake is on (one click) and car moves (very slowly) backward, the screen stays visible.
Current to the camera from a switch. So I can already give 12V to the cam when I see the parkingplace, before getting in reverse, and without having to wait for the cam and screen to respond, when needed.
Only have to put audio to 'aux' as well. Can't be too difficult. Can be done on switchboard, touchscreen or voice-controlled.
That's enough for 'testing'.
Mirror/LCD, later maybe.
JK

axeman71 06-04-2010 09:26 PM

As far as cutting wires, if I understand what I read correctly in the Nissan AV service manual, the display wire connecting the AV unit to the screen is a composite wire (all colors in 1 wire) not 3 wires (RGB). That means I can't tie in the backup camera unit. I don't want to buy it because I'm pretty sure it won't work.

Shootpetoet 06-05-2010 04:46 AM

See my previous post.
Plug the camera in the yellow connection, in centerconsole.
Switch current to camera, shortly before parking.
Put AV in 'AUX'. Lift handbrake, one click.
Watch your back (on screen). Check for available space.
Park your car.
;-)

those are only for 09 just keep in mind. Great deal though, they usualyl sell them for 400+

I haven't done anything with this yet b/c my wheels were stolen, causing me to pay the 500 deductible and spend 1100 on an alarm, and i have wheels on order. For now, my wallet will be happier if i just turn around and look. But i really do want this. I think the solution is to wait till october and see if the dealers can install the 2011 camera into our cars.

Shootpetoet 07-05-2010 08:48 AM

ebay-interface

Strange.
It says: "You factory navigation player cannot play DVD movies, you will need to install external video source such as DVD player, game console, or iPod video."
And in my car, movies play nicely on my dvd-player though.
I did NOT install any 'interface'. Anyway, my reverse-cam works fine. Installed it to the aux-connection between the seats. Car in reverse, audiosystem to 'AUX', drive slowly, and screen works well, with clear view to back-up camera.
2 hours work to install. 100$ for the camera.
Good luck with installation of your ebay-device. Let us know if it workes. And if you have the 2010-Z-with +9G HD and DVD-player.
