New iPad going in Z

Just bought my new Ipad. Already talked to a couple shops on ideas for custom in dash options for it in the upper cubby. Will post pics as soon as I do. For now a picture of my home screen! It's awesome btw, for all the people hating on it, don't knock it till you try it.

I have had one for a while now, and it is a fantastic tablet. Not to mention there will be so many more to come since now it's jb'd!

370zFORme!! 05-14-2010 01:54 PM

Ya man it seriously enhances browsing experience for me. Pictures are so much more clear and the video is high def. Was it hard to jailbreak?

BLUESLATE 05-14-2010 01:56 PM

Super easy. :D

Literally took less than a minute.

Nice thanks buddy!

350z_2nr 05-14-2010 02:35 PM

I'm on mine now lol. What are the benefits of jail breaking?

Jesse_Hunter 05-14-2010 02:46 PM

I'm really excited to see the set-up for one in a Z, I was about to buy a kenwood DNX???, but I'd like to see how the tablet works before I finalize that decision.

So I did a little DIY, here is the final product. I will post a complete DIY guide later on tonight. Heres a little teaser!

Where's the DYI? Hurry thyself! :)

bigaudiofanat 05-15-2010 12:57 AM

Honestly I do not like it, does not look factory or fit in. But glad you got it installed.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Ive gotten nothing but compliments so far. Thanks for the input though!

Sibze 05-15-2010 10:14 AM

I'm super nervous to do it. Can you still plug it up to iTunes at all?

Rockstar 05-21-2010 03:34 PM

I honestly don't see the reason for jailbreaking an iPad at this point. Nice DIY though. I like it!

iff2mastamatt 05-22-2010 11:40 AM

I just got the 32gb wifi, but wouldn't the ipad 3g be more useful? I'd love to use pandora, or slacker radio while driving. Do you have mifi or something to hook it up to the net?

370zFORme!! 05-22-2010 12:42 PM

The wifi model is a waste of money IMO. It doesn't have a gps chip. I use mywi through my jail broken iPhone. So it would be a waste of time putting it in the car for navigation. But if you have mywi or mifi and the wifi model you can use it for pandora and web browsing.

agreed.. And the cell phone clips to hold it on? :wtf2:

That thing is going thru the windshield if you have to jam on the brakes.

How is that actually useful?

Gazza 05-24-2010 03:18 PM

What a way to ruin the look of a well designed, good quality dash..!!!

I know it's not permanently fixed/attached but.......

It looks Bloody Ridiculous mate.....!!

Ya now if it was integrated into the dash that would be different.
Sorry OP just our opinion.

Actually no it doesn't move anywhere, it's locked in. The cell phone clips have a locking mechanism. All you have to do is push the buttons to release it. It's useful because I use it for navigation with navigon. Also there is a new Jailbroke app called Full Force that forces iPhone apps into ipad scalabilty. So I have the biggest factory navigation screen on the market. Plus it's a mobile office for returning email, browsing the web at lunch time and playing musing from my iPod all at the same time. Very useful if you ask me. Any other questions?

Don't worry about it mate, I've gotten plenty of positive remarks on the inventiveness and look of it to where your dislike doesn't really ruin it for me. Plus I actually enjoy it. Go figure. Thanks for stopping by though!

Ya no worries man. No need to apologize. I realize this is a public forum and there will be haters and supporters alike. I just put this up for people who will use it and to show that's it's possible in the z. if you don't like the look, you don't have to use it. To me it's useful and I actually like the big *** screen.

labk888 05-27-2010 12:26 AM

I just posted a couple of videos of how I mounted my iPad.

KillerBee370 05-27-2010 05:28 PM

Pretty cool. Not my thing but pretty cool nonetheless!

flashburn 05-27-2010 06:43 PM

It might be cool, but I'd hate to see what that thing might do to you if you are in an accident. "Death by IPad" would definitely be a lame way to go.

labk888 05-27-2010 07:55 PM

I am not sure which install you are referring to. The install of the OP of this thread has his iPad loosely mounted by wedging some clip holders into the cubby door. I can't speak to the safety of that type of install.

As far as my install is concerned...
My install is different. My iPad securely rests within a commercial cradle specifically designed for the iPad, which is hard mounted to a Lexan plate which is directly mounted to the chassis of the car. The cubby has been completely removed and replaced by the Lexan plate. If an impact would dislodge that connection, I would have bigger problems than an iPad flying around. ;)

Actually my set up is not loosely mounted. As I've said before, the phone clips have a locking mechanism and don't allow the ipad to move at all once locked in. Although the next set up I'm working on is gonna blow socks off. Stay tuned!

labk888 - Looking forward to your DIY man...great job guys...You convinced me to save my money on the factory Nav and go this route.

labk888 05-28-2010 12:19 PM

Sorry for the delay guys... I am currently swamped at work. I am hoping to post the DIY sometime tonight or tomorrow.

Glad our ideas helped save you some money. Now it's up to you to decide which method to use. The easier/painless route which doesn't require you tearing your dash apart, or the more time consuming/flush method. May take more time and require some custom dash work, but IMO looks really good!
