Anyone Mount Their Amp on Wall Behind Seat?
 

I was looking at mounting my small amp on the wall behind the seat, since it won't fit underneath the seat. I would like to know if there's anything on the wall there that I should be aware of before putting screws thru it.

I put mine there behind the passenger seat, but the screws only go through the carpet. Its holding just fine too.

Just a side note if I had more time than what I did the wires would of been tucked threw the plastic backing. The screws fo threw the plastic and do not over tighten them as I said if I had more time I would of even did a backing for that as well. I talk to the owner almost on a daily basis and he has nothing but good things to say about it. Also for the amp I recommend the alpine pdx 5 as it is quite underrated and small.

This is one thing to consider. Also, I was wondering if there is anything on the otherside of the sheet metal; afraid of hitting something back there. My amp is small, so a bunch of velcro may keep it vertical. Plus, the carpet will stick to the one side of the velcro locks; so you wouldn't have to put the sticky backing on the carpet.

I believe I'm going to have my amps installed on that spot on the carpeted walls next week. I think the installer is going to use a silicon base on the metal behind the carpet, and then use wood rails on the other side of the carpet, screw those two together, and then screw the amps into the wooden rails. That way you don't possibly change the integrity of the car by screwing holes into the metal.

I recall someone else saying on the other side of that wall is the gas tank.


edit: Just want to make clear, the spot I am talking about is actually below where bigaudiofanat did his install. My amps are way too damn big to fit up there nicely. I also wanted to have the wires run more cleanly.

Depending on the size of the amps, I've had good luck with mine under the seats. Cooling hasn't been an issue.

I had some concern with mounting on the flat surface behind the seats, mainly appearance, and function. With the seat all the way back, there didn't appear to be much room between the seat and the wall.

I put mine under the seats and ran the wires under the carpet to the center console and kick panels.

After looking at the spot I was talking about some more, I'm not sure if I'm going to mount there or not. The problem with mounting the amps there is that it would stop me from being able to slide the seats all the way back. I might have to look into doing something with the top shelf area instead. For some reason I thought my amps were too big for the shelves, but they actually aren't.

The alpine amp mounted there had no effect on the seat sliding back and forth fully. How big of an amp are you talking about?

I was wondering the same thing, which is definitely the case for the passenger side. My seat position on the drivers side leaves me just enough space to mount it there on that side; so this is my plan. I bought some cheap velcro at WM which the loops don't catch the carpet. I'm going to try some heavy duty velcro tonight.

I bought some industrial strength velcro, and even the loopy piece of this won't stick to the carpet back behind the seat. There's just not enough fabric for it to grab ahold of; as it sticks to the carpet on the back of seat and the floor mats. If anyone knows of some other type that might stick let me know. Otherwise I guess I'll just screw it down. Are we certain there isn't anything directly behind the sheet metal here?

Like I said before, someone else in another thread mentioned the gas tank is behind that wall. I'm sure it isn't directly behind it, but you still need to be careful. How about drilling/cutting holes into only the carpet, then use a bolt plus a washer and nut? I would think that would give enough support.

nice access but not sure if that is considered a clean install. i much prefer somewhere 'hidden'... but that's just me.

Well my car is in the shop today to have all the audio work done. We decided to go with using both of those shelves to hold my amps. I'm going to start a thread with pictures later on this week.
