Does anybody here have a spare tire sub box?

Hey guys. I've been wanting a sub in my spare tire enclosure and stumbled upon this one by Wicked C.A.S.. I was wondering what you guys think of it?

Also, should I go for a single 10" or a 13"? I listen to a lot of death/prog metal as well as electronic music (mostly synthwave stuff, but also some rap) and a lot of jazz. I've heard that smaller subs are better for faster responses (such as fast kick drums) but don't hit quite as hard (for longer, lower hits). I also don't want my music overly bass heavy, I just feel like the stock speakers are a little lacking. Would a 13" sub turned down (volume-wise) sound fine for my needs?

I built my own spare tire sub enclosure. I made a fiberglass mold of the spare tire, similar to the wicked CAS sub you posted above. I used a Pioneer shallow mount 10" sub, which for my music tastes suits me perfectly. I listen to a wide range of music from rock to 90s hip hop, to some electronic dance as well. There's some pictures in my gallery from when I first built it.

Imo i think a 12" is a nice in between, i doubt you need a 13" for your needs.

Awesome, I checked it out. So after building your own and checking out the one I linked, what do you think? Would you recommend the kit or just making a custom one?

Well the Wicked CAS only has a 10" or a 13" option. I may go with 10" because I don't want the bass to be too overpowering :)

Some of us bought the https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item...-VPAS12ST.html

I like it, if you're just looking for balanced bass to take the load off your midrange drivers, it's perfect. It can get pretty loud, but I never turn it up much to really know. I just know it can get louder than I care for.

I would HIGHLY suggest replacing your stock speakers first though. The stock stereo is trash. You may actually be happy with the amount of bass without a subwoofer.

Speaker replacement is in my plans as well as adding the sub :) It's just not one of my priorities at the moment. But thanks for the suggestion! Is that an entire sub? What else would I need? Also, one of the benefits of the Wicked CAS enclosure is that (apparently) I would be able to keep my spare tire since it fits in the area inside of it, and with this Vega one, I'm assuming I'd have to remove my spare completely

CRiZO 04-22-2019 09:18 PM

It fits inside the spare, at least if you have a sport. Dunno about base. Yeah that's the whole thing, it's powered so there's nothing more than a power to the battery, and signal / rcas to the headunit (if you have a headunit with a sub out). I think it can work with speaker wires as well, but I didn't do that.

TheWolfe 04-22-2019 09:30 PM

Hmmm. Yeah, I've got the base with nothing done to the speakers yet (so base stereo and all that, too)... I know that the base models have smaller spares, but I don't know if that'd affect this.

I'll have to check out some reviews or maybe make a poll haha

If you're good with power tools, have patience to work with fiberglass, and want to save some money I would give a try at building your own. Otherwise, I think the wicked CAS box is one of the best options. You still have full use of your trunk, and able to keep your spare tire.

I'm no pro, but following a few tutorials on youtube and a post here by a user "BoneZ" I was able to make it without any issues. It sounds very solid and that pioneer sub hits pretty damn good.

Awesome, thanks again! I'll be sure to do all that :) I'm redoing my entire trunk this summer (air, sub, and wood paneling) but I'd like to still be able to, you know, use my trunk :rofl2: so these seem like good options vs. a box :)

If you don’t mind giving up your spare, here is a lot cheaper option. One of the reviews said it worked perfectly in a 370z

Universal Fit Single 10" Subwoofer Sealed Replacement Spare Tire Custom Sub Box https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MFDNC17..._QhEXDbS55MRBX

Oooo thank you! :driving: I'll check it out :)

You still looking? I've got a Zenclosure box with Image Dynamics ID10 sub in it. It goes in the hatch so may not be what you're looking for. But I'll up be in Dallas in a couple of weeks and could deliver :twocents:

johnrockets 11-11-2019 08:12 AM

I also have an upfiring box from Zenclosures with a Hertz sub that sounds great, but don’t like it’s visible at all times, and that you lose the security screen and the extra trunk space. I would much prefer one of the Wicked C.A.S. stealth boxes if they weren’t so pricey. I’ll end up getting one when I run into some extra cash.
