Getting started

I dropped the cash on a 500-5 today. I want to do a ten inch sub i believe. Still undecided on components?? I think i'm gonna do a a slim line sub. (Save as much space as possible)
any suggestions would be appreciated.

bigaudiofanat 12-01-2009 09:31 PM

What is your budget, what do you listen to? Also what are you going to use to power your components? All that can help me help you find a good set of components. I would say you could go with either a 10 inch or a 12. Both will sound good with a z enclosure.

Matt 12-02-2009 02:17 PM

I'm using an IDQ10 in a Zenclosure. Check my pictures to see how much space it takes up. I definitely recommend both of these products, the sub sounds absolutely amazing. Depending on your music, any more than the 1 10" might be overkill.

For the components, I went with Focal, but there are plenty of good speakers out there to choose from. Like Big said, what's your budget? There will be a completely different field to choose from if you're looking at $150 instead of $500 or $2000.

SlikNik 12-02-2009 02:46 PM

I am using the JL 12w6v2 in a Z Enclosure. 500 watts to the sub.
Slams hard and clean, Rock/Rap/Country

2fast4thelaw has a the 13"JL slimline sub I believe in a custom box. Check his threads on his system. Plus there are loads of Youtube videos of different subs out there.

Having had a 10" sub ( Boston g2) in the 350Z the 12"JL hits much harder in my 370 and has better sound. If you have more cash go to a 1000 watts and get the 12W7. Definitely go with a 12" if you go with 1 sub

Some say JL is overpriced, well so are Italian sportscars, and I wouldn't mind owning one of them, or you could buy a Ford Focus, both will get you from point A to point B

bigaudiofanat 12-02-2009 04:14 PM

I second the ID Q subs they absolutely smoke the JL's. "sorry slik but they are overpriced IMO" They get my vote and I personally had one.

I have a single 10" and it sounds better than many of the dual 12" setups I've had in the past (lower quality subs, but still 12"). I listen to everything, and even on hip hop/pop music, the bass can almost be too much for me.

So I think a single 10" can be plenty for some, but i can see how others may want more bass.

bigaudiofanat 12-02-2009 04:22 PM

I had the 12 inch ID Q sub and it was great either 10 or 12 will be solid and tight from Image dynamics.

Not a chance bro:stirthepot:

Plus the guy is actually looking for a slim design. Hopefully 2fast will chime in.

bigaudiofanat 12-02-2009 04:52 PM

LOL everyone has opinions. (^_^) And they do

Matt 12-02-2009 06:20 PM

I know my IDQ10 beats out a previous W6 I had a while back (7+ years). Haven't read anything but negative stuff about the W7's and I've never done any of the research on any of the slim subs.

Don't have a budget , i buy if i think it's worth it. If it too much i buy lesser , if i really want it ill save and get it.
"What are using to power the componenets" 500-5.

I have not made up mind on box , really want to save space. May have to get custom box made in spare well. So i'm sure it will have to be slim line.

HT Rambler 12-02-2009 07:28 PM

I listen to all kinds of music probably 85% rap. but i'm not a base head , i like tight base. I don't want to rattle the cars next to me.
My truck is dynomatted !! i'm gonna do the same to the z.

bigaudiofanat 12-02-2009 08:36 PM

So your looking for a full system?

If you have no budget you can put together a killer system.

For speakers I would look at image dynamics xs, rainbow, and polk sr series.

Amps higher end ones are audison and zapco. But as you said you already have one.

Subs imaged dynamics Q series now because you listen to rap I recommend a 12 inch as it will go deeper and lower.

Now I am being sort of open to the selection as I have said a lot about choices in previous threads. Also if I had a actual budget to go on I could help you more. The sub boxes I recommend looking at z enclosures as they can go in and out easily and no modifications are needed. If you would like a more detailed selection just ask. "little busy tonight that is another reason I have not went into details"

ID Subs are good, but they do not smoke JLs unless you are talking W-1's or W-0s. JL Audio has made subs longer than anyone in the market and have always set the bar for sound quality and performance. JL subs are expensive because they are one of the very few manufactures that are manufactured in the US. They also do NOT cut corners on quality or materials.

I dont care what anyone says, JL subs are the bomb!

The perfect match to the 5/500 amp is the 12W3v3. I had this combo in my 350z and it sounded amazing. The bass is painfully tight and hits incredibly low. This sub rocks on 250watts rms, any more would be a waste.

Just get a good set of components and DONT skimp! Get some Focal's in those doors and you will have one killer system.

LOL I am not saying JL is not good but I will say their is better out there for the money. They are good but over rated and over priced from what I have seen and heard.

ConchZ2 12-03-2009 10:48 AM

HT Rambler………..you should take 2fast4thelaw’s advice. He is correct! And the Focal speakers would match perfectly. When it comes down to advice/opinions………….trust the one who actually has own the speaker and the car its installed in.

If you want to shake your neighbor’s house………….. Rockford Fosgate T215D2.(not a slim design)

speedfreak28 12-03-2009 10:59 PM

Go with the W6v2, I have owned both and still own and IDQ and the W6 takes the cake. The 500/5 is a great amp for going active with its staggered front and rear channels. Ive said it before, some of the best components for the money are Pioneers TS-C720prs. The frequency respnse graph is as smooth as sets that cost about 5 times as much. Spending big money isn't neccesary if the install is on point. Big audio keeps reccomending an IDQ like he owned, even though he claimed in his for sale thread he never used it, weird.
Make sure you deaden your doors with a dynamat or second skin mass loaded deadener and then use an acoustic foam over that. Spend the money and Install correctly the first time.:tiphat:
TS-C720PRS - Pioneer Premier 6.75" Component Speaker System

bigaudiofanat 12-03-2009 11:24 PM

Do not forget speed that I have done installs that have used ID subs. I have also done a few install with JL subs as well. I also agree with the detaining any high end audio is not worth putting in unless you damping the rattles and echoing from the metal.

Also I would watch what I buy from the premier line as they are being discontinued.

HT Rambler 12-04-2009 08:53 AM

Hey guys thanks for all the responses. I'm not much on pioneer at all just personal choice. not going to bash them just not my thing. Have not owned any focals but heard them in the stores , also there are other good seperates. Dont know much about cdt but have read a little on them. Putting a lot of stock in conchz2 , and 2 fasts ,( since he has the same equipment in the same car) so that is a plus. Also as stated before doing it correct the first time is a must dynamatt etc.... Everyones opinion is respected and apreciated thanks again !!

You are both serving false information. And the real answer won't be available until CES 2010. You should both attend, maybe have a few beers together.
