My Tablet Story (yes another one)

Hello all, I will try to keep this as short as possible. My wife tells me I tend to ramble. I have always enjoyed working with projects like this. I got my ham radio license at age 11 (I'm now 60) and worked as a electronic tech at the Postal Service for 32 years.
So I got my Black 2013 Z last summer after our Ford Explorer caught on fire at 2 am and burnt our garage taking out my new Altima and my wifes Luxus Suv. Our Shitzu woke us up or we would of lost a lot of the house. Anyway,I had the Z for a week before I ripped out the stock sound system and put in a DDX9501HD with Focal 165FX speakers. Wow what a difference. And while I had the doors apart I used Dynamat.

We recently switched At&T and they gave us 3 LG G pad 7" tablets. So I was thinking maybe one would go into the Z. After researching the net till my eyes were bleeding I came to the conclusion that there were 2 decent options. The modified NAV piece or the 3D printed one from Larry at 370DesignZ. I called him up and found that he also got his ham radio license at age 13 so we had a little in common. Long story short I bought the Tablet mount from him and just got it installed. I am posting a few pictures. I am really happy with this setup. I got a OBD2 bluetooth from ebay and playing with torque software and also run Spotify music streaming on it so far. Anyway please ask any questions you like. I am not a salesperson for these tablet mounts just a customer But... They are nice and a lot of work went into them. I think Larry did a great job working with the 3d printer. My wife was right. I do ramble a little. Thanks for looking

Thanks for the input. It's still a work in progress. Maybe the rubber case around the tablet makes it not to your liking. I took a few more pics in better light. Still in the garage. Thanks, Mike

Yeah I dont like the rubber case look. Sort of just looks jammed in there. I am a bit obsessive on the interior looking clean. ;)

Also Fox news?

meggan kelly is the best on Fox. Just saying

And I might have to agree about the case. I'm going to rethink that. I'm sure not afraid of honest criticism.

Looks decent, I'm guessing without the case you could see right through to the wood brace? I mounted a Nexus 7 2013 in my Kia Sportage and did something similar as a mount, piece of wood with l brackets to hold it in place (2 screw spots). I used a case with the cover removed to hold the tablet, then again that was in a double din enclosure not the storage area above our decks, can that area fit a 8" tablet ok?

swj123 08-12-2015 08:36 PM

I just measured the opening and it was a little over 8" wide by 5" tall.
I had the tablet mounted to the board on the back at first with velcro but there was a gap around the tab. So I thought I would try the silicon case. I was cheap on ebay. I'm not sure if I am going to stay with that or try something else. Since I am OCD pretty bad it seems like I am never happy with my projects. The tablet I am using is great since it is 4g on at&t. I actually started this with the idea of using Torque with bluetooth OBD2 to monitor engine stats. But there is so much more it can do that my Kenwood Head Unit cant.

Also I just wanted to let people on here know about the tab holder that Larry in Dallas had 3D printed. It is actually very nice.

Guys - I have yet to start the modding but looking for a decent tablet and then I will start designing a "flush" solution. I too would like a "clean" look to the dash and what is currently available is mediocre at best.

OP - glad you found something you like :)

The tablet case ... is just terrible... someone else in this forum did the same thing and sells the mold piece and it just looks terrible. It has be smooth and blend-in with the interior of the car. I want to do this project myself, and I'm doing research on working with fiberglass and hopefully my schedule clears up by mid October and I can get started. Sorry bro but this looks terrible I'm not going to sugar coat it we are all grown up. I subscribe to the same rules and standards so I'm hard on myself a lot. You seem talented I have a feeling you can do a lot better.

swj123 09-03-2015 10:31 PM

That's what I call honest criticism. Now that I have it running mostly with Spotify and Torque OBD2 I am going to see what I can do to make it look better. I am always looking to better my projects. The tablet running 4g on the At&T network is pretty cool. Thanks for the input and honesty.
I'll be watching to see what you come up with.

I was thinking of mounting a tablet to the back of the boot door. Having a custom hinge swing out from underneath and flip up to the upright position. This way I can hide it for a clean look, and also security while parked.

I have been thinking of mounting a tablet on the back side of the boot door with a custom hinge, and having it flip forward to the upright position when I need it. It would keep the clean look when not in use, and tuck away for security while parked.

To clarify, I am not talking about it hanging from the door, but having a slim hinge that will be locked in place with the boot door clicked shut.

Much cleaner fit can be obtained, but congrats on the install.

My is simple, moveable and light....

But, congratulation, great work!

I have been wanting to do this too, since I got a tablet with 4G and bluetooth. It's a Verizon Ellipsis, but it'll do the trick. I have a '13 Base Sport, and wanted to put the tablet in the cubby door location. So I removed the dash trim, removed the cubby door, and double sided taped Neodymium magnets around the back side of the dash trim. I think I used 6 in total. 2 on top and 2 on each side. These came with some very weak square magnets which I taped to the bottom corners of the cubby. The downside with this setup is that you have to put magnets on the back of your tablet in the locations of the dash magnets.

Some photos of my mod are attached. I'm really happy with it, even though you can see a bit of a gap on the bottom. That allows me to pull the tablet out to charge it, turn the volume up and down, and sleep it when I am just listening to music or something.

This mod cost me $17.50 with tax for the 3 packs of magnets and mounting tape, so I will live with the gap and magnets on my tablet.

All apps, and the tablet as a whole, have been running perfectly smooth with the magnets attached.

Hello all, I am the original poster of this thread. If you look at post 1 you can see where I started. It was a little crude but has worked great. Mostly on Spotify, Torque, and google maps. I started with a 7" LG G Pad on my AT&T acct. Well I just got the 8" Gpad and thought I would see how that fit. I took the dash apart for the (lost count) times and pulled the 7" LG out and tried fitting the 8" LG in and whoa it fit perfect. No gaps (well maybe 1/4 inch at the top but that' all. Put a block of wood to hold it in place and I think it looks a lot better.
You know sometimes you have to try things a few times before you get it right. I got some comments about the 7" G pad with the rubber case looking like crap. And I agree it was cheezy. But I think this will be better. And I like having a tab on 4G network. Anyway I have a few pics. I will post more tomorrow when the light is better in the garage. Here goes and don't be afraid to hurt my feelings. I was a Elec Tech at the Postal Service for 32 years so I don't have feelings any more :)
